Already from the discovery 30 years ago, we have known that this probiotic strain is unique and offers remarkable benefits. A brand-new review article is now published in the journal Beneficial Microbes, summarizing the comprehensive science supporting the bacterial strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v* (LP299V®). The review provides an opportunity to truly get to know and understand the benefits and the extensive research.
The review gives an overview of the in vitro, animal, and clinical studies with LP299V. It covers the knowledge on how this strain acts, the binding mechanism, the effects on the gut epithelium and mucus production. It is the deep understanding that makes us trust this probiotic strain.
The strain LP299V is the most clinically documented L. plantarum strain in the world and has been described in over 200 scientific publications and subject to more than 65 human clinical studies. The numbers continue to grow as new studies are conducted. There is a wealth of data, showing benefits primarily for gastrointestinal health, such as reduced flatulence and abdominal pain in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
In addition, several clinical studies have shown positive effects of LP299V on iron absorption and more recently also on iron status. The LP299V strain is safe for human consumption and does not confer antibiotic resistance. It survives the harsh conditions of the human gastrointestinal tract, adheres to mannose residues on the intestinal epithelial cells and has in some cases been re-isolated more than ten days after administration ceased.
Besides studying health benefits, research groups around the globe have investigated this strain in a range of applications and processes. LP299V is used in many different food applications as well as in various dietary supplements.
